Isaiah 53:2 "For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a
dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is
no beauty that we should desire him."
Isaiah is still speaking about the servant... "Behold
my servant..." (Isaiah 42:1) "Behold, my servant..."
(Isaiah 52:13) We can know certain things about this servant of the Lord.
We know there is a report concerning Him. In fact, the entire Bible is the
report concerning this servant, the Son of God, named Jesus. He is the Son of
God who was made flesh. He came as a tiny Baby, born in a stable in Bethlehem.
Angels sang His praises. Kings bowed down to worship Him. Lowly shepherds came
to adore and acknowledge the report. "He shall grow up." We are told
in Luke 2:52, "Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with
God and man." Yes, He grew from a tiny baby to a man of 33 1/2 years old.
In those years, we see the very character of God exhibited in human form.
Because of sin, this world had become so contradictory to Him. Hebrews 12 tells
us, "For the joy set before Him, He endured such contradiction of sinners
against Himself..."
We see many paintings of what people think Jesus may have
looked like. The truth of the matter is that we have no idea what he looked
like. We know He was born of the Jews, so we can assume He had olive
skin. There was nothing in physical appearance that would draw people to
Him. The people thought Jesus was there to overthrow the Roman
government. We could say He didn't fit in, but He did not come here to
fit in. He was indeed "a root out of dry ground." He came for one
purpose, and only one purpose: "He shall save His people from their
sins." (Matthew 1:21) Now being here in that purpose, Jesus also
performed many miracles and taught beautiful lessons that most people could not
understand... at that time. Even the scribes and pharisees scratched
their heads because they could not understand Him. May I submit to you that it
is only as the Holy Spirit reveals our need for Jesus that we can see the true
beauty of our Lord and believe the report. He came to save and that is
what He did. He is Lord and Saviour and though people did not desire Him now,
there will come a time when every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of the Father.
