Isaiah 57:15 "For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose
name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a
contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive
the heart of the contrite ones."
Where does God live? Some say He lives in heaven, and He
does. Some say He lives everywhere, because God is not contained in one single
place. And that's true. Solomon spoke those words when he prayed the prayer of
dedication for the temple. He asked a question and then made a proclamation.
"But will God in very deed dwell with men on the earth? behold, heaven and
the heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house which I
have built!" (2 Chronicles 6:18) Would God actually dwell with men on
earth? He is bigger than the heaven of heavens. There is no place in this
universe where God is not found. He is in all places at all times at the same
time. So where does God live? Where is His habitation?
Today's verse says that He inhabits all eternity. He dwells
in the high and holy place. We would still miss the mark even if we allow our
thoughts to go to the very extreme concerning the greatness of God. But
the beauty of today's verse tells us that though God is high and lofty, we can
still have fellowship with Him. I ask the question one more time:
"Where does God live (dwell)?" He tells us, "I dwell...
with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of
the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones." Paul answers
the question, "What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy
Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?" (1
Corinthians 6:19) God lives in us! He then tells us the effect that
should have upon our daily lives. "For ye are bought with a price:
therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's."
(1 Corinthians 6:20) I love that old hymn, "You ask me how I know He
lives.... He lives within my heart."
