Isaiah 66:1 "Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest?"
"The heaven is my throne..." We know this is symbolic of God's
authority. Let me use God's Word to describe the things concerning this
subject. "And after these things I heard a great voice of much
people in heaven, saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and
power, unto the Lord our God. And I heard as it were the voice of a great
multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty
thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth."
(Revelation 19:1,6) Yes, God reigns and rules in heaven. All power belongs to
Him both in heaven and in earth. Every knee shall bow and every tongue shall
confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of the Father. Though Isaiah was
inspired to write in symbolism, these words are not symbolic, but the absolute
truth. The throne of God is in heaven "... and the earth is my
footstool." This speaks of God's movement upon the earth.
Though the wording may be symbolic in this part, we know God moves upon the
earth. Aren't you thankful that He does move among us?
I'm thankful that God, the Holy Spirit, moves among us and He moves us by
stirring our hearts. It is according to His movement that we are able to build
a house unto Him. The Psalmist declared, " Except the LORD build the
house, they labour in vain that build it." (Psalm 127:1) If God does
not reign in heaven and in earth and if He does not move among us and move in
us, then we are not able to build anything that is suitable for Him. But the
wonder of it all is that God in heaven does move and stir and direct and
comforts and encourages and everything else that we need in order to set our
house in order. This house wherein God finds rest is the house of our lives. We
are to build our lives upon the truth of God's Word. Jesus speaks of the wise
man who built his house upon the rock. The rock foundation for our lives is
none other than "Jesus Christ, and Him crucified." We cannot build
without the proper tools. A carpenter does not use a child's play hammer to
build a house. He uses that which is capable of completing the job. I conclude
this morning with these verses where we find the proper tool for building our
house. "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable
for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
(17) That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto
all good works." (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
