John 16:7-11 "Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. (8) And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: (9) Of sin, because they believe not on me; (10) Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; (11) Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged."
We remember these words were spoken by Jesus after He had told them that He was
going away. He was going back to the Father's House. They were disappointed and
sad, but in those hours, Jesus gave many promises that were all to come true.
One of those promises was that the Father would send the Comforter - the Holy
Spirit. Although they would not have the visible Jesus with them, they would
not be left alone. The Comforter would bring to their remembrance all the
things that Jesus had said to them in the past three and a half years. That
promise is still true with us today. We have the Holy Spirit of God living
within us and He guides us each day of our lives.
How does He do this? I cannot fully explain in my words, but I hope to give my
thoughts on what Jesus was telling the disciples, and us, about the Comforter,
the Holy Spirit of God. "He will reprove the world of sin."
That is to say that He will convince us and convict us about spiritual
matters of life. Without the Holy Spirit we would not have spiritual life. Without
the Holy Spirit, we would know nothing about our precious Lord. Without the
Holy Spirit, we would have no understanding of "right and wrong."
Without the Holy Spirit, we would not have a concept of righteousness, much
less be able to work righteousness in our lives. I repeat myself, but we all
too often give credit to "our consciences" instead of understanding
that the Holy Spirit is the One Who convinces us of sin in our lives. He shows
us "the error of our ways," and then He convicts us of those sins.
But thank God, He does not leave us there. After He convinces and convicts us
of sinfulness in our lives, He then convinces and convicts us of that which is
right (righteousness). He leads us in the "paths of righteousness for His
name sake." I do not even want to imagine what this world would be like
without the Holy Spirit of God moving in us and among us. Thank you Father for
loving us enough to pay the ransom and then to give us of yourself in showing
the way of godliness in our lives. Thank you Holy Spirit (yes He is a Person)
for being active in us. Thank you for showing us the manner in which we are to
honor our precious Lord.
