Daily Devotion: Exodus 1:8

Exodus 1:8    "Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph."

The book of Exodus begins at a time when God was going to bring about His promise of deliverance. The promise goes all the way back to the days of Abraham, pre-Isaac. When God had promised a son to Abraham and Sarah, He told them that their seed would be in a strange land for 430 years before He would bring them out. You remember the account of Joseph being sold into slavery by his brothers. We could feel sorry for him in that his brothers despised him to the point that they would sell him, but God had a plan. His father, Jacob and family, were caught in the drought with no food, but God had a plan. Through the years, Joseph was used by God to provide for His people because God had a plan. Israel was brought to Egypt for 430 years because God had announced His plan to Abraham.

As time approached, "... there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph." Notice the word, now, that I just left out. It was according to God's plan that a new king rose up over Egypt. It was according to God's plan that this new Pharaoh was allowed to inflict cruelty to the people of Israel. It was according to God's plan that the people grew weary and restless in the land of Egypt. But it was NOW that God raised up a deliverer to lead the people out. It was a process of time, but it was all according to God's plan. The "new king" did not know Joseph and the agreement that had been made by the former Pharaoh. The "new king" felt threatened by the people who were being abundantly blessed by God. The "new king" did not feel the need to be friends with the people of Israel; rather, he saw them as a threat. But NOW, the "new king" was used by God to prepare the people to follow Moses. The thing that I learn from today's verse is that sometimes "new things" come into our lives that are being used by God to move us forward into the place where He has blessings prepared for us. Are we ready to follow Him wherever He leads us? May our faith take the Word of God that we have learned and put it into practice in our lives. May we exercise trust and obedience unto the Lord.

Take up thy cross and follow me
I heard my Master say
"I gave my life to ransom thee
Surrender your all today"

Wherever He leads, I'll go
Wherever He leads, I'll go
I'll follow my Christ who loves me so
Wherever He leads, I'll go

Daily Devotion: Colossians 1:25-26

Colossians 1:25-26    “Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;  Even   the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:” In verse twenty-four, Paul has expressed his joy in bearing hardship for the church. It is of this church, the body of Jesus Christ, that he is made a minister. Since Paul used the phrase “made a minister” in verse twenty-three of this same chapter, it seems there is something important that he wishes to convey. The Greek word translated as “made” means “to cause to be.” It was the will of God (Col 1:1) that caused Paul to become a minister. God is always the cause of true ministry. Although our fathers may be ministers, if we become true ministers of the gospel it is  not  because our fathers are ministers. True ministers of the gospel do not take that path because they seek honor for themselves, or b...

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...
