Psalm 46:1 To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, A Song upon Alamoth "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."
Today's Psalm is "a Song upon Alamoth." To be honest, I'm not sure
exactly what Alamoth means, but the root of it speaks of something veiled or
hidden. The Word of God teaches us that no man, in the flesh, can look fully
upon the face of God. We see Him by faith as we study His Word. Peter writes to
us concerning Jesus, "Whom having not seen, ye love..." (1 Peter 1:8)
No, we have never seen God in His fullness; yet, we know and love the fact that
He is our Creator, Lord, and Friend. Today's passage tells us that He is
"a very present help in trouble." The world often asks, "Where
is now their God?" But you and I know that He is more real than we are.
From everlasting to everlasting, He is God! So, other than His very being, what
is hidden concerning our God? Why would David write a song from the feminine
gender concerning our God being our help? If we all are honest with ourselves,
we have had times when our prayers were not answered as quickly as we wanted
them to be answered. And in those times, we are tempted to ask -(silently, if
not audibly) - "Lord, are you hearing my prayers?" If you have
never had a hint of that question in your mind, then please pray for the rest
of us.
Though we may have questions, our hearts of faith assure us that "God is
our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." SO - what are we
to do during those times when it seems our answers do not come as quickly as we
think we need them? This 46th Psalm gives us the answer: "Be still, and
know that I am God." Be still. Now how hard is that? I have sympathy for
children (and adults) who cannot sit still in church. I am one of those
squirmers, myself. I cannot physically sit still for any length of time and
even worse than that, I cannot make my mind "be still" for any length
of time. I have to continually ask God to forgive me when my mind begins to
wander while I am praying. Can you identify with that? I wish I could give you
a definite formula on this subject of being still before God. I struggle with
it myself. But I know that it is very important to try to get away from
anything that could influence our minds to go somewhere else other than the
very throne of God. Maybe that's why Jesus said, "Enter into your closets
when you pray." This thing I do know... It is very important that we do
not allow the news anchor person to influence our ways of thinking. We saw
yesterday concerning the throne of God and the fact that our God is in control.
I also know that is the first step in being still before Him. We must come to
the conclusion and find rest in the great truth that ... "God's got
this!" Thank you, Lord.
