Daily Devotion: Psalm 50:1-2

Psalm 50:1-2    A Psalm of Asaph "The mighty God, even the LORD, hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof.  (2)  Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined."

We read in Psalm 19:1, "The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork." How do the heavens declare the glory of God? This may sound very simple, but it seems to me that every day the declaration of God's faithfulness is made as the sun is rising. Last night, we looked into the heavens and saw the stars shining. I look out the window this morning and there is a breeze blowing. There is a mixture of blue sky and gray clouds. I see the birds flying and hear them singing. In other words, the heavens and all that is in them declare the glory of God simply by being what they were created to be. Today's passage tells us that "Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined."

God's glory shines out of Zion. What does Zion represent? As David was writing, he spoke of Zion as being the city of God where God had chosen to place His name. That city was Jerusalem where God declared, "I have chosen Jerusalem, that my name might be there...." (2 Chronicles 6:6) It was in Jerusalem that the temple was built unto the Lord. It was in Jerusalem that God determined the feasts were to be kept. The mountains surrounding Jerusalem came to be known as Zion. It was the foreshadowing of the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ. Today, we are to shine out the glory of God. We are spiritual Zion, the Church of the Firstborn, the spiritual city of God that sets upon a hill. So, how are we supposed to shine out the glory of God? This may sound simple, but I believe we do it just as the sun, moon, stars, and all that we call nature. We are simply to be what we were created to be: The children of God. We are to show God's glory in all that we do.  He continues that thought farther in this 50th Psalm. "Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High:  (15)  And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me." (Psalm 50:14-15) We are to be bold in giving acknowledgement unto the Lord for all He does. We must be vocal in our praises unto Him.

Daily Devotion: Colossians 1:25-26

Colossians 1:25-26    “Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;  Even   the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:” In verse twenty-four, Paul has expressed his joy in bearing hardship for the church. It is of this church, the body of Jesus Christ, that he is made a minister. Since Paul used the phrase “made a minister” in verse twenty-three of this same chapter, it seems there is something important that he wishes to convey. The Greek word translated as “made” means “to cause to be.” It was the will of God (Col 1:1) that caused Paul to become a minister. God is always the cause of true ministry. Although our fathers may be ministers, if we become true ministers of the gospel it is  not  because our fathers are ministers. True ministers of the gospel do not take that path because they seek honor for themselves, or b...

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...
