Daily Devotion: Psalm 109:21-26

Psalm 109:21-26    "But do thou for me, O GOD the Lord, for thy name's sake: because thy mercy is good, deliver thou me  (22)  For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.  (23)  I am gone like the shadow when it declineth: I am tossed up and down as the locust.  (24)  My knees are weak through fasting; and my flesh faileth of fatness.  (25)  I became also a reproach unto them: when they looked upon me they shaked their heads.  (26)  Help me, O LORD my God: O save me according to thy mercy:"

To be quite honest, I tried to avoid this Psalm. As I began to read it, I felt a heaviness come upon me as I read how the Psalmist was about as low as a man can go in his spirit. He was asking God to have a special place beside his enemies where Satan would stand. I really tried to just move on to the next Psalm without writing anything about this one. But I came to verse 26 and I realized that whether we go as deep in the hole as this Psalmist or just in a place that seems lonely and dark, there is a place where every one of us meet together. That place is where we stand to say, "Help me, O LORD my God." I may have written about this instance before, but it comes to my memory quite often. My best friend and I were out in his yard throwing a football. His father was working on a lawnmower in his little shop. Apparently he came to a place where a bolt would not come loose when I heard him say, "Lord, help me get this loose." Those words have stayed in my heart for over 60 years. His heart was so close to God that he asked for his help in what most would consider a trivial matter. So, my thought this morning is that whether we are trying to maneuver through life in a dark place or trying to get a bold loose on a lawnmower - there is nothing too large or too small for us to ask God, "Help me, O LORD my God."

Thank you Lord!

I need Thee ev'ry hour, most gracious Lord;
no tender voice like Thine can peace afford.

I need Thee ev'ry hour, in joy or pain;
come quickly and abide, or life is vain.

I need Thee, O I need Thee; ev'ry hour I need Thee;
O bless me now, my Savior, I come to Thee.

Daily Devotion: Colossians 1:25-26

Colossians 1:25-26    “Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;  Even   the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:” In verse twenty-four, Paul has expressed his joy in bearing hardship for the church. It is of this church, the body of Jesus Christ, that he is made a minister. Since Paul used the phrase “made a minister” in verse twenty-three of this same chapter, it seems there is something important that he wishes to convey. The Greek word translated as “made” means “to cause to be.” It was the will of God (Col 1:1) that caused Paul to become a minister. God is always the cause of true ministry. Although our fathers may be ministers, if we become true ministers of the gospel it is  not  because our fathers are ministers. True ministers of the gospel do not take that path because they seek honor for themselves, or b...

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...
