Psalm 136:1-3 "O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. (2) O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth for ever. (3) O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth for ever."
When was the last time you took time to just sit and meditate upon the goodness
of God? I'm asking myself that question, by the way. Have you ever just sat and
thought back on your life as to the many ways in which God has delivered you in
your struggles and trials? As I look back on my life, I can assuredly say with
the Psalmist in another place, "If it had not been that the Lord was on my
side...." I can plainly see that as I look back, but how often do I then
take time to simply "give thanks unto the Lord; for He is good. His mercy
endures forever." That is what the writer of the Psalm was doing. Not only
was he looking back over his own life, he was thinking back through the history
of the nation of Israel at the many times in which the Lord had intervened. He
thought of the Red Sea where God opened the way. He thought of the many nations
who had risen up against them and how God had delivered them. He went
farther than that to remember how the power of God had created the stars in the
sky and all the universe. He thought of redemption that was given to them by
the grace of God.
This morning I want to just think about Jesus and all He has done for me. While
thinking about what He has done in the past, I can also think upon this very
moment that my Lord sits here with me directing my thoughts. I can think about
what He has prepared for me in heaven's glory where, by His grace alone, I will
spend all eternity with Him in heaven. I could never give proper thanks unto
Him for all He is and all He has done, but I should give it my very best effort
every single day to lift up the name of Jesus and to know His blood has made me
free indeed! This morning, I just want to say with the Palmist, "O give
thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. O give
thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth for ever. O give thanks to
the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth for ever."
Give thanks with a grateful heart
Give thanks to the Holy One
Give thanks because He's given Jesus Christ, His Son
And now let the weak say, "I am strong"
Let the poor say, "I am rich
Because of what the Lord has done for us"
