Daily Devotion: Psalm 139:14

Psalm 139:14    "I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well."

I encourage you to read the entire 139th Psalm. We will likely come back to this Psalm tomorrow.

We read in Revelation chapter 4 that the four beasts around the throne of God "... rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come." Then we read of the four and twenty elders that they "... fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created." That can be found in Revelation 4, verses 8, 10, and 11. By faith we understand that whatever they are seeing is more glorious than anything we have ever laid eyes on while going through this life. They fall down. They cease not to worship and praise. They never stop crying out, "Holy, Holy, Holy."

Today we have another "I will" promise from the writer toward God. "I will praise thee." That stands on its own even if we did not know the rest of the verse. God is worthy of our praise! If those angelic beings bow down and worship, certainly we, the redeemed of the Lord, have every reason to worship our God. Holy is the Father! Holy is the Son! Holy is the Holy Spirit! Every action of God toward us is framed in righteousness. But the writer has something very specific in mind when he declares his praise unto the Lord. "I am fearfully and wonderfully made." If we all are open to ourselves, we will admit that we take so much for granted every single day. Do you have to remind your heart to beat? Do you have to remind your lungs to take breaths? I just reached up to scratch my nose as I was typing this. I didn't have to think about it. I just did it. It was an automatic reflex that God has built into us. We have an itch. We scratch it. We are wonderfully made in that God has given us a brain to reason things. We are able to see, hear, think, walk, talk... well you get the idea. We might take those things for granted until an unusual pain comes along. We are wonderfully made; yet, we are also fearfully made in that our bodies are so tough and rugged and yet so fragile. I'm just thinking this morning about how good our God truly is in that He has created this glorious machine that we call our bodies. Thank you Heavenly Father! May I never take your handiwork for granted anymore.

1. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.
Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

2. Holy, holy, holy! all the saints adore thee,
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea.
Cherubim and seraphim, falling down before thee,
Who was and is and evermore shall be.

3. Holy, Holy, Holy! though the darkness hide thee,
Though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see,
Only thou art holy; there is none beside thee,
Perfect in pow'r, in love, and purity.

4. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth, and sky, and sea;
Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity.

Daily Devotion: Psalm 88:1-4

Psalm 88:1-4  A Song or Psalm for the sons of Korah, to the chief Musician upon Mahalath Leannoth, Maschil of Heman the Ezrahite. "O LORD God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee:  (2)  Let my prayer come before thee: incline thine ear unto my cry;  (3)  For my soul is full of troubles: and my life draweth nigh unto the grave.  (4)  I am counted with them that go down into the pit: I am as a man that hath no strength" I've said this before and I will say it again (and probably more times before we get to the end of the Psalms) - I love the Psalms because I can surely identify with them. Most Psalms start in a low place and as the writer expresses his thoughts, the Lord begins to lift him up out of that dry place.  Though this entire Psalm is a fervent cry unto the Lord, the Psalmist tells us specifically in three verses that he cried daily unto the Lord. Just a few Psalms ago, we were reminded that God always hears our prayers. ...

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...
