Daily Devotion: Psalm 139:15-18

Psalm 139:15-18    "My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.  (16)  Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.  (17)  How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them!  (18)  If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee."

As I begin to write concerning these verses, my mind goes back to verse 6, "Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it." Such knowledge is too wonderful ... It's filled with might and wonder and power and grace. When I was being formed in my mother's womb, God saw me and knew me. "All my members were written in thy book." I think of the Prophet Jeremiah, "Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations." (Jeremiah 1:5) I am compelled to speak concerning the sanctity of life. When does life begin? I have somewhat of a different take on this subject. I believe life, itself, began when God breathed the breath of life into Adam's nostrils. Bear me out. Life does not begin at birth. Life does not begin at conception. That precious gift of life continues at conception in the form of a new being when two living cells join together. It isn't just an embryo. It isn't just a fetus. God sees and knows us as tiny baby  human beings through all of the process of growth in the mother's womb.  I was not hidden from Him when my substance was made in secret. I am so thankful for the precious gift of life that God saw fit to breathe into us.

But then to think about this... "How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God!" From the very beginning, God loved us and designed the plan whereby His precious Son would come into this earth and lay down His life. God loved us and declared that only the blood of the very Lamb of God, Jesus Christ, would be made the proper atonement for our sins. In that perfect love, God gave us life and purpose. We read in Jeremiah 29:11, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end." Yes, I know that is specifically spoken to the nation of Judah, but I find great comfort to know God has a plan for my life. Don't you? Also we read in Jeremiah 31:3, "The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee." Again, I know it was written specifically to Judah, but I find great assurance to know that God has always loved me and He always will love me. Thank you Heavenly Father! Thank you Jesus! Thank  you Holy Spirit!

1 The love of God is greater far than tongue or pen can ever tell;
it goes beyond the highest star, and reaches to the lowest hell;
the guilty pair, bowed down with care, God gave His Son to win;
His erring child He reconciled, and pardoned from his sin.

Refrain:
O love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure:
the saints’ and angels’ song!

3 Could we with ink the ocean fill and were the skies of parchment made,
were ev’ry stalk on earth a quill and ev’ry man a scribe by trade,
to write the love of God above would drain the ocean dry;
nor could the scroll contain the whole, tho' stretched from sky to sky. [Refrain]

Daily Devotion: Psalm 88:1-4

Psalm 88:1-4  A Song or Psalm for the sons of Korah, to the chief Musician upon Mahalath Leannoth, Maschil of Heman the Ezrahite. "O LORD God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee:  (2)  Let my prayer come before thee: incline thine ear unto my cry;  (3)  For my soul is full of troubles: and my life draweth nigh unto the grave.  (4)  I am counted with them that go down into the pit: I am as a man that hath no strength" I've said this before and I will say it again (and probably more times before we get to the end of the Psalms) - I love the Psalms because I can surely identify with them. Most Psalms start in a low place and as the writer expresses his thoughts, the Lord begins to lift him up out of that dry place.  Though this entire Psalm is a fervent cry unto the Lord, the Psalmist tells us specifically in three verses that he cried daily unto the Lord. Just a few Psalms ago, we were reminded that God always hears our prayers. ...

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...
