Daily Devotion: Ephesians 6:10-13

Ephesians 6:10-13    "Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.  (11)  Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.  (12)  For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.  (13)  Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand."

I cringe when I hear someone talking as if they have the power within themselves to defeat the devil. The Word of God teaches us that all our strength and power comes "in the Lord." When David went against Goliath, he did not rely upon his own ability with the sling. He certainly did not rely upon the armour of King Saul. He had not proven them to be reliable for him. But David went against Goliath in the name of the Lord. "Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand" (1 Samuel 17:45-46) "I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel." David did not want the glory for himself. He did not want the glory to be given to Israel's army. He was giving all glory unto the Lord and David  wanted Goliath's last moments on this earth to be filled with the sound of his praise unto the Lord. As the Apostle Paul completed this letter to the Ephesians, he wanted their hearts and minds to be filled with the power of Almighty God.

Stand in the power, wisdom, and strength of the Lord because the enemy is too great for you to try to defeat on your own. He is cunning and wily. He wrote the book on deception. He can make you consider the wrong target as being the enemy, "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." Because Satan can blindside us, we must be prepared in the power of the might of God. We must put on His armour rather than the defenses of this world. It's only while wearing "the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand." No trained warrior would go into battle without his armour unless he was caught off guard. The Lord has spoken: "Be strong in the Lord. Put on the whole armour. Stand ready to face his sudden attacks that you may be able to withstand in the evil day."  Having done all this, we shall be able to stand!

Be strong in the Lord and be of good courage
Your defender is He who is always the same
Mount up with wings as the eagle ascending
Vict'ry is sure when you call on His name

Refrain:
Be strong, be strong, be strong in the Lord
And be of good courage for He is your Guide
Be strong, be strong, be strong in the Lord
And rejoice for the vict'ry is yours

Put on the armour the Lord has provided
Place your defence in His unfailing care
Trust Him for He will be with you in battle
Lighting your path to avoid every snare (Refrain)

Daily Devotion: Knowing God By Bearing Fruit

Some will notice the title is not “Bearing fruit because we know God,” so to avoid getting sidetracked with that, we can start with the fact that we won’t bear any godly fruit unless our heart has been changed and the Holy Spirit dwells within us. Also, to avoid confusion, I’ll be using the terms “bearing fruit,” “good works” and “service” interchangeably.  I took this article’s title from Part 7, of John Piper’s “Look at the Book” session on Colossians 1:9-12.
