Mark 2:1-2 "And again he entered into
Capernaum after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house.
(2) And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that
there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he
preached the word unto them."
I admit there are times I revert back to my childhood and to the times of which I have heard my father speak. I remember as a boy when churches would have their annual revival meetings. The building would be packed with people. Any other activity took second place to the activity of worship. I even remember times when the Lord blessed so much that the meeting would be extended an extra week. The people were afraid to interrupt the movement of the Holy Spirit in the worship services. I remember people openly rejoicing. I remember conversions taking place in the lives of people. They were sweet times of worship that occurred.
In today's passage, we find such a meeting taking place in someone's house. "It was noised that He was in the house." How sweet are those words! Jesus was in the house. I see church signs announcing this one or that one that is going to be featured. I see where celebrities are going to make appearances. It seems this is in hopes that more people will be in attendance. Oh but how wonderful it is when we hear it said that Jesus is in the house. There is no greater name to be announced.
When it was noised that Jesus was in the house, "straightway many were gathered together." Straightway, many were gathered. They didn't have to check their calendars or make excuses. They immediately gathered at the place where Jesus was. There were so many that the house could not hold them all. Again, I share a memory that was shared with me. An associational meeting was so well attended that the house could not hold them all. They built a brush arbor and began a second preaching service. That could not hold them all, so they built a second brush arbor and began a third preaching service. The people had a hunger and a need for the presence of the Lord.
What did the people receive in our text today? Did they receive some magic tricks? Did they see a circus act? We read in verse 2 that Jesus gave to them the very thing they needed: "He preached the word unto them."
My prayer and my heart's desire is that the Lord's people will come back to the place where the need and desire for the Word of God will overcome whatever else may be drawing them away from the basic need of life. May God grant true revival in His church across this land.
