Isaiah 63:1-3 "Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save. (2) Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat? (3) I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment."
"Who is this?" His garments were dyed. His apparel was red. What
caused His garments to be dyed red? "Who is this?" The answer
is found in these words, "I that speak in righteousness, mighty to
save." " I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there
was none with me." Let me say that I believe these verses speak of Jesus
and His work of redemption that was accomplished on the cross of Calvary. It
was on that cross that Jesus endured the very wrath of God.
Let's look at some passages in the book of Romans that I believe tie this all
together. Paul tells us in Romans 1:18, "For the wrath of God is
revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who
hold the truth in unrighteousness." Let's be very specific. God hates sin!
Yes, let me say it again. God hates sin! And if the work, that is described in
our verses for today, was not true, then that very wrath would be poured
out on us. Because as is told us in Romans 3:10, "There is none righteous,
no, not one." But we can rejoice because there was One who treaded
the winepress of God's wrath in our place. His name is Jesus. "Surely he
hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken,
smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he
was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and
with his stripes we are healed." (Isaiah 53:4-5) What was the red dye that
stained His garments? His blood that was shed for the price of our redemption
and forgiveness stained His garments. Let me place those words again right here
from our text. "Their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I
will stain all my raiment." Now let's look at the conclusion of this
matter as written by the Apostle Paul, "But God commendeth his love toward
us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (9)
Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath
through him." (Romans 5:8-9) This One with dyed garments stained by
His shed blood saved us from God's wrath and purchased our home in heaven.
"Glory to His name!"
