Daily Devotion: Isaiah 64:6-8

Isaiah 64:6-8     "But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.  (7)  And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities.  (8 )  But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand."

"For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith." (Romans 12:3)  I start my thoughts with Paul's writing because there are times when we might be tempted to think ourselves to be better than another. Paul said, "Don't think more highly of yourselves than you ought to." Isaiah said, " We are ALL as an unclean thing, and ALL our righteousnesses are as filthy rags." If we heed the words written, we can understand that none of us could do anything to bring ourselves out of that state of sin.  "There is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee." This all sounds  rather morbid, doesn't it? We were dead in trespasses and sins and there was nothing we could or would do to make it any better. So then, what hope do we have?  You see, that's what we were, but what are we now and how did it happen? We see in verse 8, " But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand."  The work of the Potter was focused on the work of Jesus Christ as He laid down His life on the cross. His death, and only His death, paid the penalty for my sin.

By God's amazing grace given unto me (and you), "we are God's workmanship created in Christ Jesus..."  May the Lord help us by His Holy Spirit to live in such a way as to look up to Him rather down on others in fulfilling our purpose in life: Glorifying His Holy Name!
