Daily Devotion: Revelation 19:6 and Genesis 1:1-3

Revelation 19:6    "And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth."

Genesis 1:1-3     "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.  (2)  And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.  (3)  And God said, Let there be light: and there was light."

Recently, we were reminded of God's sovereignty in creation. Before there was nothing, God is. When there was nothing, God is. Before there was a universe, God is. Before there was manifested light, God is. The point I'm trying to make is that before me, God is. Without me, God is. Without God, I am nothing. God is my all and in all. I take very literally the words of Jesus when He said, "Without me, ye can do NOTHING." (John 15:5) Without God, the earth was without form, and void. Without God, darkness was upon the face of the deep. But when God's Spirit moved, all that changed. Can you see the point I'm trying to make? My life - your life- without God was empty and void. There was no purpose.  There was no rhyme or reason. There was NOTHING.

Think about this: "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground... " (Genesis 2:7) Solomon wrote, "Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was...." (Ecclesiastes 12:7) Our bodies came from the dust of the ground and will return back to the dust of the ground.  I submit to you that unless the Omnipotent God had acted upon that dust, we would only be dust. We would be as the song by the group Kansas, "Dust in the wind - All we are is dust in the wind." Now comes two of my utmost favorite words in the Bible, "But God..." "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul." (Genesis 2:7) If God had not breathed into the dust, that form would still be lifeless. "Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it." (Ecclesiastes 12:7) If God had not breathed life into that dust, there would be no spirit to return unto the Lord.  Man would be without form and void, but "Alleluia: ... the Lord God omnipotent reigneth."  Are you breathing this morning? It's because God is. Are you capable of human reasoning? It's because God is. Are you able to understand a portion of God's omnipotent power? It's because God is. Did the sun rise this morning? It's because God is. Do you have reason to be thankful and give praise to the Almighty? It's because God is. Now let's praise Him together!

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...

Daily Devotion: Colossians 1:25-26

Colossians 1:25-26    “Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;  Even   the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:” In verse twenty-four, Paul has expressed his joy in bearing hardship for the church. It is of this church, the body of Jesus Christ, that he is made a minister. Since Paul used the phrase “made a minister” in verse twenty-three of this same chapter, it seems there is something important that he wishes to convey. The Greek word translated as “made” means “to cause to be.” It was the will of God (Col 1:1) that caused Paul to become a minister. God is always the cause of true ministry. Although our fathers may be ministers, if we become true ministers of the gospel it is  not  because our fathers are ministers. True ministers of the gospel do not take that path because they seek honor for themselves, or b...
