Daily Devotion: Psalm 29:1-2

Psalm 29:1-2     A Psalm of David.   "Give unto the LORD, O ye mighty, give unto the LORD glory and strength.  (2)  Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness."

"Give unto the Lord."  What do we have that God could possibly need? Nothing! God does not need us to do anything and there is nothing we can do that would add to God's glory and power. Yet, we read the Psalmist David telling us to "give unto the Lord." What are we to give? Yes, I'm full of questions this morning. David tells us to give "glory and strength" unto the Lord. The Lord is all powerful and full of glory and honor for all eternity. So what does our giving do, if it doesn't add anything to Him?

First of all, what does it mean to give glory and strength to the Lord? I ask again - what does our giving accomplish if it doesn't increase the Lord? I submit to you that when David tells us to "give unto the Lord," that he is instructing us to give our praise unto Him. We are to place our estimation of God in its fullness. We are to attribute all glory, honor, power, wisdom and praise unto our God. In order to do this, we must realize at least a portion of His greatness. Yesterday, I ended my writing with some of the words of the song by Chris Tomlin that declares, "How great is our God!" We sing it and it brings sweet thoughts to our hearts and minds. But do we really stop to think about His greatness and the greatness of His name. The name, Jesus, should evoke humility from us and honor to Him. Paul tells us that "At the NAME (emphasis mine) of Jesus, every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that He is Lord to the glory of the Father."  We see the name of God being used lightly in writings. We see it in Facebook posts. We hear it in conversations. People throw the name of the Lord around like it means nothing. This should not be! His name is full of glory and honor and when we esteem it as such, our lives become more hopeful and peaceful. Lord, please help me always to show honor and glory to you by honoring your name.

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus; there's just something about that name.
Master, Savior, Jesus, like the fragrance after the rain;
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, let all Heaven and earth proclaim
Kings and kingdoms will all pass away,
But there's something about that name.
Kings and kingdoms will all pass away,
But there's something about that name.

Daily Devotion: Mark 14:65-67

Mark 14:65-67    "And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him, Prophesy: and the servants did strike him with the palms of their hands.  (66)  And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest:  (67)  And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth." It's always nice and sweet when Devotions make us feel good about ourselves. But sometimes the Word of God causes me to become uncomfortable. Today's verses bring me to that place. It would be so very easy for me to look at the contrast between what was happening to Jesus and what was happening with Peter. It would be very comfortable for me to sit here this morning and condemn Peter for standing outside by the fire while Jesus was inside being mocked, spat upon, and struck by the servants of the high priest. It would be easy for me to sit here and say, "...
