Daily Devotion: Romans 5:12-15

Romans 5:12-15     “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:  (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.”

We often hear it said that it is not fair that we should be held responsible for Adam’s original sin. Paul addresses this idea here in verse twelve. He readily acknowledges that sin entered into the world by the action of one man. There is no “fair” or “not fair” here; it is a simple fact.

When sin entered into the world, it ushered in death. The righteous God of creation told Adam concerning the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil “the day thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die (Genesis 2:17).” There was no gray area here. The transgression of God’s law would bring certain death.

Once death entered into the world, it passed (pierced through) upon all men. However, Paul makes it clear here that death passed upon all men because all men have sinned. Regardless of how we might feel about being held responsible for Adam’s sin, it becomes a moot issue when we understand that we have sinned on our own. The wages of sin is death; we have sinned, and therefore we have earned death.

From Adam to until Moses, there was no other law spoken from God other than the injunction against eating of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. This did not mean that sin did not exist before God gave Moses the Ten Commandments. Remember, sin entered into the world by Adam. Sin entered into the world, and it did not go away.

Even though sin was in the world, without specific instruction (law), sin was not imputed (reckoned). Other than what God had put in the hearts of men, there was no express law to account for it. It is still evident that sin was in the world because men died. Although their years were generally much longer than we experience today, death that came by sin was still active in the world.

It did not matter that those who came after Adam had not committed the same sin that Adam committed. It did not matter that sin was not reckoned under a particular set of laws. Sin was in the world, and the proof was the men died. The law that God gave to Moses was given to shed light on why men died.

Adam was the son of God (Luke 3:38). He is the figure (shadow) of Him that was to come. Whereas Adam’s (one man) offence ushered in death, the free gift of grace through Jesus Christ (one man) ushered in life. Adam was the son of God, fashioned from the dust of the earth. Jesus is the only begotten Son of God, conceived of the Holy Ghost.

May we bow before Him in adoration that His grace is sufficient to make us free from the law of sin and death!

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...

Daily Devotion: Colossians 1:25-26

Colossians 1:25-26    “Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;  Even   the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:” In verse twenty-four, Paul has expressed his joy in bearing hardship for the church. It is of this church, the body of Jesus Christ, that he is made a minister. Since Paul used the phrase “made a minister” in verse twenty-three of this same chapter, it seems there is something important that he wishes to convey. The Greek word translated as “made” means “to cause to be.” It was the will of God (Col 1:1) that caused Paul to become a minister. God is always the cause of true ministry. Although our fathers may be ministers, if we become true ministers of the gospel it is  not  because our fathers are ministers. True ministers of the gospel do not take that path because they seek honor for themselves, or b...

Daily Devotion: The Peace Of Christ - John 14:27

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. – John 14:27 As I sit and enjoy the Lord's creation and I feel the cool breeze blow across my skin, I am reminded of the peace that we find when we stop to appreciate the works of God. While we cannot necessarily count on another tomorrow in this world, all of God’s children have the assurance of something purer, something brighter, in the world to come. This brings peace when everything seems chaotic and difficult here and now. Jesus Christ was and remains a complex Person. Not only do we have to wrestle with His dual nature, we must face the depth of His teachings. Many of the Lord’s teachings are easy to grasp even if they are hard to apply. (Have you tried loving your enemies lately?) However, some of the Messiah’s sayings make us think very hard indeed. Isaiah 9:6 famously reveals that the virgin born Son of God would be the Prin...
