Ephesians 2:13-14 "But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. (14) For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us"
We concluded last week's thoughts on the subject of hope by being reminded that
Jesus Christ is the anchor of our soul. He is our hope; that is, He is our
blessed assurance that we have eternal life in Him. Not only is He the
assurance of our hope, this week we begin by being reminded that "He is
our peace." We will talk more about the subject as the week goes on, but
this morning I just want us to think about the word, peace. Depending on which
dictionary you use, there are many definitions of the word, peace. Some of them
include, freedom from disturbance, a state, or period, when there is no war,
and another is a period of silence. Yet another definition speaks of having
freedom from internal commotion. As I think of this peace, I am looking at the
thought of having freedom from internal disturbance. I'm looking at it from a
personal level, as I do believe we can have that personal, internal state of
quietness and freedom from inner turmoil. I do not believe that we can force
ourselves into that inner state of peace. There must be the power of One who is
much greater than I to initiate and maintain that peace within. Today's
Scripture gives us the answer: "He is our peace."
We read in Romans 5:10, "... when we were enemies, we were reconciled to
God by the death of his Son..." Remember one of the definitions says that
peace is a period when there is no war. We were enemies of God; yet through
Christ Jesus we have been reconciled (set at peace) with God. We can experience
that peace by faith in the finished work of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are told
in that same 5th chapter of Romans and verse 1, "Therefore being justified
by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." Through
the precious shed blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, we have been set at peace with
God. In Christ, we have been delivered to that state of having freedom from
internal commotion. There is much to be said about peace and our attaining to
that state. I pray we can think on these things this week and find that inner
peace through Christ Jesus.
