Daily Devotion: Psalm 61:1-4

Psalm 61:1-4  To the chief Musician upon Neginah, A Psalm of David.   "Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer.  (2)  From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.  (3)  For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy.  (4)  I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings. Selah."

I must admit to you that there are times when I cry out to God without stopping to realize the very basis upon which He hears my prayers. There is indeed a reason upon which God hears us when we cry out to Him. It isn't simply because we are hurting; though, He is touched by the feelings of our infirmities. It isn't simply because we have gotten ourselves into a mess and don't know how to get out. It isn't simply because we need help in any given situation. No, there is only one basis upon which God hears our prayers AND there is only one basis upon which we have been given access to the very throne room of God. Remember the night Jesus was betrayed and He had His disciples gathered in the upper room? From John, chapter 14 through chapter 16, Jesus spoke of our praying "in my name." It is most important to understand the reason for this.

You might be asking about now, "What does this have to do with Psalm 61?"  I'm glad you asked. David is speaking of crying out unto the Lord and He gives us the basis upon which he cries out and the basis upon which God hears and answers. Notice his requests: "... attend unto my prayer... lead me to the rock... you are my shelter and strong tower... I will abide in thy tabernacle... I will trust..."  What was David trusting in? Was he trusting in his ability to pray beautiful prayers? (He did pray some very beautiful prayers.) Was he trusting in his ability to take himself into that shelter, tower, and tabernacle? (He was a strong man of war, for sure.) The answer to all this is found in verse 4, "I will trust in the covert of thy wings. Selah."  He is saying, think about this. There is only one route to get to the throne of God and it was by way of the blood. Under the old covenant, the high priest would enter once a year into the Holy of Holies and sprinkle blood upon the mercy seat. Do you remember what was over the mercy seat? We read in Exodus chapter 25 that the mercy seat would have two cherubs fashioned into the gold covering. "And the cherubims shall stretch forth their wings on high, covering the mercy seat with their wings, and their faces shall look one to another; toward the mercy seat shall the faces of the cherubims be." (Exodus 25:20) It was under the covering of the wings that the blood was sprinkled. Our access to God is based upon one thing and only one thing: the precious blood of the Lamb of God, the ONLY name upon which our Heavenly Father hears us... Jesus Christ. Our faith is based upon the shed blood of Jesus and through Him we have access to God.

The Blood Will Never Lose It's Power
by Andrae' Crouch

The blood that Jesus shed for me
Way back on Calvary
The blood that gives me strength
From day to day
It will never lose its power

It soothes my doubts and it calms my fears
Andthatsameblood dries allof my tears
Oh,the blood that gives me strength
From day to day
It will never lose its power

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...

Daily Devotion: The Peace Of Christ - John 14:27

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. – John 14:27 As I sit and enjoy the Lord's creation and I feel the cool breeze blow across my skin, I am reminded of the peace that we find when we stop to appreciate the works of God. While we cannot necessarily count on another tomorrow in this world, all of God’s children have the assurance of something purer, something brighter, in the world to come. This brings peace when everything seems chaotic and difficult here and now. Jesus Christ was and remains a complex Person. Not only do we have to wrestle with His dual nature, we must face the depth of His teachings. Many of the Lord’s teachings are easy to grasp even if they are hard to apply. (Have you tried loving your enemies lately?) However, some of the Messiah’s sayings make us think very hard indeed. Isaiah 9:6 famously reveals that the virgin born Son of God would be the Prin...
