Daily Devotion: Psalm 71:7

Psalm 71:7    "I am as a wonder unto many; but thou art my strong refuge."

"I am as a wonder unto many."  David had heard all the songs that had been sung about him. After he slew Goliath, "... the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands." (1 Samuel 18:7) For a period of time, he had heard this sung more than once. In other places, people would say, "Isn't this the David that had this sung about him?"  Also, David had been blessed to write many many songs about his experience with the Lord. Those songs had been sung by the best singers and musicians. He had achieved great success in many areas of his life.  I've often said that one of the worst things a congregation can do for their pastor is to tell him how "good he is." He's human and he might just start believing it. So, how do we go about showing our appreciation for a pastor or anyone else who has been an influence in our lives?

"I am as a wonder unto many; but thou art my strong refuge." David understood how great things the Lord had done for him, by him, through him, and to him. This was his humility that was speaking when he penned these words.  This is how I read those words: "Lord, many things have been accomplished in my lifetime. People see those things from the outward line of visions, but I know that without you, I could have done nothing good." This was his way of saying, "Thank you, Lord, for all your wondrous works you have accomplished in my lifetime." How should I go about showing my appreciation for a good job done by my pastor? It seems to me the best and safest manner of doing that is by saying something of this nature, "I thank the Lord for giving you the words that have stirred my heart."  In this Psalm, David is giving the Lord all praise from the moment of his birth until the day of his death. "Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come." (Psalm 71:18) I write this today with the exhortation that we would all be as the prophet Isaiah when he wrote, "And in that day shall ye say, Praise the LORD, call upon his name, declare his doings among the people, make mention that his name is exalted." (Isaiah 12:4) I want to lift up the mighty name of Jesus each day I live. He is my "strong refuge."

Daily Devotion: Colossians 1:25-26

Colossians 1:25-26    “Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;  Even   the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:” In verse twenty-four, Paul has expressed his joy in bearing hardship for the church. It is of this church, the body of Jesus Christ, that he is made a minister. Since Paul used the phrase “made a minister” in verse twenty-three of this same chapter, it seems there is something important that he wishes to convey. The Greek word translated as “made” means “to cause to be.” It was the will of God (Col 1:1) that caused Paul to become a minister. God is always the cause of true ministry. Although our fathers may be ministers, if we become true ministers of the gospel it is  not  because our fathers are ministers. True ministers of the gospel do not take that path because they seek honor for themselves, or b...

Daily Devotion: Isaiah 66:1

Isaiah 66:1    "Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest?" "The heaven is my throne..."  We know this is symbolic of God's authority.  Let me use God's Word to describe the things concerning this subject.  "And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God. And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth." (Revelation 19:1,6) Yes, God reigns and rules in heaven. All power belongs to Him both in heaven and in earth. Every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of the Father. Though Isaiah was inspired to write in symbolism, these words are not symbolic, but ...

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...
