Daily Devotion: Psalm 90:10-12

Psalm 90:10-12    "The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.  (11)  Who knoweth the power of thine anger? even according to thy fear, so is thy wrath.  (12)  So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom."

This is the third day that we have looked at these verses. They are packed full of wisdom and knowledge for us. We finished yesterday with the thought of our days being numbered and we should use each day in such a manner that we show forth the glory of God in our lives.  I wrote the first day about the "dash" between the dates on a tombstone. We have a date of birth and we have a date when life on this earth will cease. There was a time in my life when that thought scared me. I didn't want to talk about it or even think about it. But since I have passed the "threescore years," I find myself in those thoughts more often. I love the manner in which the Holy Spirit inspired the Psalmist to write concerning that time: "We fly away."

I see those words describing a time of escape. I think of a bird escaping from a cage when the door is left open. It has known nothing but the prison bars of that cage - UNTIL - it has the opportunity to "fly away." There is gladness to be free from the confines of that cage. But now, it is flying free. There was no opportunity to find out how it feels to be able to fly through the air. But now it is flying free. I'm so thankful the Psalmist used the words, "we fly away." We will be free from the confines of this body that is prone to weakness and sickness. We will be flying free. We will not have to deal with temptation and sin in our lives. We will be flying free. There will be no more sorrow and pain. We will be flying free. I'm like the little boy who did not raise his hand when the preacher asked who wanted to go to heaven. He replied when asked why he didn't raise his hand, "I want to go, but I thought you were trying to get a busload to go right now." If the Lord calls me today, it will be fine. I will be flying free. If He still has work for me to do on this earth, it will be fine. I have the promise that one day, I will be flying free.  Thank you Heavenly Father for that blessed hope and assurance that one day, I will be going to the Father's House where I will be eternally free!

Some glad morning when this life is o'er - I'll fly away
To a home on God’s celestial shore - I'll fly away

When the shadows of this life have gone - I'll fly away
Like a bird from prison bars has flown - I'll fly away

Just a few more weary days and then - I'll fly away
To a land where joy shall never end - I'll fly away

I'll fly away, oh glory - I'll fly away
When I die, Hallelujah, by and by - I'll fly away

Daily Devotion: Colossians 1:25-26

Colossians 1:25-26    “Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;  Even   the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:” In verse twenty-four, Paul has expressed his joy in bearing hardship for the church. It is of this church, the body of Jesus Christ, that he is made a minister. Since Paul used the phrase “made a minister” in verse twenty-three of this same chapter, it seems there is something important that he wishes to convey. The Greek word translated as “made” means “to cause to be.” It was the will of God (Col 1:1) that caused Paul to become a minister. God is always the cause of true ministry. Although our fathers may be ministers, if we become true ministers of the gospel it is  not  because our fathers are ministers. True ministers of the gospel do not take that path because they seek honor for themselves, or b...

Daily Devotion: Exodus 7:6-10

Exodus 7:6-10    "And Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded them, so did they. And Moses was fourscore years old, and Aaron fourscore and three years old, when they spake unto Pharaoh. And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, When Pharaoh shall speak unto you, saying, Shew a miracle for you: then thou shalt say unto Aaron, Take thy rod, and cast it before Pharaoh, and it shall become a serpent. And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh, and they did so as the LORD had commanded: and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh, and before his servants, and it became a serpent." Moses and Aaron had begun to doubt whether they were right for the job the LORD had given them. Here, it is evident that God granted them a renewal of their faith. Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded them. In my opinion, all truly successful outcomes in our lives begin with this. Moses and Aaron were not young men. Moses was eighty years old, and Aaron was eighty-three years old. Still,...

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...
