Daily Devotion: Psalm 92:13-15

Psalm 92:13-15    "Those that be planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God.  (14)  They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing;  (15)  To shew that the LORD is upright: he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him."

"Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God."  What a glorious statement that is!  I see many people now who ask the question, "Why should I go to church?"  Their thought is that they can worship God just as well at home as they can at Church. I will agree that there are times when we worship at home and feel the presence of the Lord. We can worship God in most places that we go. But can we worship Him to the same degree as we do when we are assembled with other people who love the Lord?  I have to say "no" to that question. You may ask me why I answer in that way. Let me use some Scripture to bring us to that conclusion. The wise man was inspired to write, "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." (Proverbs 22:6)  Paul was inspired to write concerning fathers and children in Ephesians 6:4, "... bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord."  And then the writer of Hebrews instructs us in Hebrews 10:25 that we are not to forsake the "... the assembling of ourselves together..." These words were not written just to fill space in a book. They are instructions given that we might renew our hearts and minds in the things concerning the Lord. It is for our good that we remain faithful to attend the House of God.

"They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing; To shew that the LORD is upright: he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him."  Good fruit comes as the result of being planted in good ground. I'm convinced that the fruit comes as a result of several things. First, we are the planting of the Lord. The Prophet Isaiah wrote in chapter 61:3, that we are "trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified." Yes, God first gives life and then we are to nurture that life through parents who love the Lord. Parents should be willing to teach and to live according to the Word of God. That isn't to say that we are perfect, but we strive each day to do better than the day before. We nurture that life through reading and meditating upon the Word of God. And yes, we nurture that life by being faithful to attend the House of God where the Word of God is boldly preached. Then we nurture that life by attempting to apply the Word of God in our lives. You can read Galatians, Chapter Five to see the fruit of the Spirit that our lives are to "bring forth in old age." One of the fruits of the Spirit that we can experience through this is peace. Aren't we all searching and seeking for peace in our lives?

1 Far away in the depths of my spirit tonight
Rolls a melody sweeter than psalm;
In celestial-like strains it unceasingly falls
O’er my soul like an infinite calm.

2 What a treasure I have in this wonderful peace
Buried deep in the heart of my soul,
So secure that no power can mine it away
While the years of eternity roll. [Refrain]

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...

Daily Devotion: Exodus 7:6-10

Exodus 7:6-10    "And Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded them, so did they. And Moses was fourscore years old, and Aaron fourscore and three years old, when they spake unto Pharaoh. And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, When Pharaoh shall speak unto you, saying, Shew a miracle for you: then thou shalt say unto Aaron, Take thy rod, and cast it before Pharaoh, and it shall become a serpent. And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh, and they did so as the LORD had commanded: and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh, and before his servants, and it became a serpent." Moses and Aaron had begun to doubt whether they were right for the job the LORD had given them. Here, it is evident that God granted them a renewal of their faith. Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded them. In my opinion, all truly successful outcomes in our lives begin with this. Moses and Aaron were not young men. Moses was eighty years old, and Aaron was eighty-three years old. Still,...
