Daily Devotion: Psalm 97:1 and 6-9

Psalm 97:1    "The LORD reigneth; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad thereof."

Psalm 97:6-9    "The heavens declare his righteousness, and all the people see his glory.  (7)  Confounded be all they that serve graven images, that boast themselves of idols: worship him, all ye gods.  (8)  Zion heard, and was glad; and the daughters of Judah rejoiced because of thy judgments, O LORD.  (9)  For thou, LORD, art high above all the earth: thou art exalted far above all gods."

We read earlier in the Psalms, "Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in." (Psalm 24:7) There are certain things that are absolutes, but we cannot always see them. Sometimes, we have our heads down and focus only on the things of this earth. We rob ourselves of the blessings of the great truths in today's Scriptures when we look around instead of looking up. We rob ourselves of blessings when we look inwardly instead of upwardly. When we lift our heads and hearts toward the Lord, then we can see and better understand that only our God, and no other, is in control. Sometimes, we place our confidence in the wrong things and the wrong people. The truth of the matter is that our God reigns. He rules. His will is that of righteousness. I'm going to be very simple this morning. It's unusual for me, but I'm up before the sun this morning. But this I know.... though there may be clouds in the sky, the sun will rise today! The only way that could be prevented would be if the Son of God appeared to call us home. Otherwise, the sun will be in the sky today. The moon and stars will be in the heavens tonight. How do I know? "The Lord reigns!" He has commanded and they obey; therefore, "let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad thereof and... all the people see his glory." Some may want to place their dependence upon graven images and they may make their boasts in idols, but the absolute truth remains, "Our God reigns in righteousness and truth!" Those who trust images of things or people will be confounded and confused, but we who place our trust in the Lord will be glad. We shall rejoice "... because of thy judgments, O LORD.  (9)  For thou, LORD, art high above all the earth: thou art exalted far above all gods." So, which will it be today? Am I going to trust man who is incompetent? Or, am I going to place my complete trust in the One who has full authority both in heaven and earth?  I am in agreement with Joshua, "... as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD."

1 This is my Father's world, And to my listening ears
All nature sings, and round me rings The music of the spheres.

This is my Father's world:I rest me in the thought
Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas-- His hand the wonders wrought.

3 This is my Father's world:O let me ne'er forget
That though the wrong seems oft so strong,
God is the Ruler yet.

This is my Father's world: Why should my heart be sad?
The Lord is King: let the heavens ring!
God reigns; let earth be glad!

Daily Devotion: Colossians 1:25-26

Colossians 1:25-26    “Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;  Even   the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:” In verse twenty-four, Paul has expressed his joy in bearing hardship for the church. It is of this church, the body of Jesus Christ, that he is made a minister. Since Paul used the phrase “made a minister” in verse twenty-three of this same chapter, it seems there is something important that he wishes to convey. The Greek word translated as “made” means “to cause to be.” It was the will of God (Col 1:1) that caused Paul to become a minister. God is always the cause of true ministry. Although our fathers may be ministers, if we become true ministers of the gospel it is  not  because our fathers are ministers. True ministers of the gospel do not take that path because they seek honor for themselves, or b...

Daily Devotion: Exodus 7:6-10

Exodus 7:6-10    "And Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded them, so did they. And Moses was fourscore years old, and Aaron fourscore and three years old, when they spake unto Pharaoh. And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, When Pharaoh shall speak unto you, saying, Shew a miracle for you: then thou shalt say unto Aaron, Take thy rod, and cast it before Pharaoh, and it shall become a serpent. And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh, and they did so as the LORD had commanded: and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh, and before his servants, and it became a serpent." Moses and Aaron had begun to doubt whether they were right for the job the LORD had given them. Here, it is evident that God granted them a renewal of their faith. Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded them. In my opinion, all truly successful outcomes in our lives begin with this. Moses and Aaron were not young men. Moses was eighty years old, and Aaron was eighty-three years old. Still,...

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...
