Daily Devotion: Psalm 103:1-5

Psalm 103:1-5    A Psalm of David. "Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.  (2)  Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:  (3)  Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;  (4)  Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;  (5)  Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's."

"Bless the LORD, O my soul."  I'm thinking just now of that word, "bless".  More times than not, that word speaks of God's blessing His people. When He called Abram out of the land of the Chaldeees, God said to Abram, "I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing." And in today's verse, we are called upon to bless the Lord.  Being one who wants to see what the words mean, I looked in the Strong's Concordance for the definition. I was surprised to see the same word is used when we are blessed of the Lord and when we are to bless the Lord. I found that the word, bless, has a double meaning - depending upon the context in which it is used. It can mean "to bow in adoration" or to be a "benefit."  As in all of Scripture, we must look at the context even when trying to find the definition of a word.

So then, how can we possibly bless the Lord?  "What can I possibly do that would benefit God?"  It is very apparent that today's passage speaks of our adoration unto the Lord.  I can do nothing that would add to God's character or that would benefit Him.  We saw back in Psalm 29 that we are to "give unto the Lord the glory due unto His name." We are to give praise unto the Lord. We are to give thanks unto Him. When our hearts and minds are taken to the fact that God blesses us with salvation, forgiveness, healing, redemption, lovingkindness and mercy, our hearts are humbled and we begin to speak glory unto the name of the Lord. When we realize that our God supplies every need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus, we begin to speak our love and attention to Him. When we are blessed to be able to do all things through Christ which strengthens us, then we honor Him by the expressions of adoration and thanksgiving. Today, I want to ""Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name." Would you join with me?

Daily Devotion: Colossians 1:25-26

Colossians 1:25-26    “Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;  Even   the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:” In verse twenty-four, Paul has expressed his joy in bearing hardship for the church. It is of this church, the body of Jesus Christ, that he is made a minister. Since Paul used the phrase “made a minister” in verse twenty-three of this same chapter, it seems there is something important that he wishes to convey. The Greek word translated as “made” means “to cause to be.” It was the will of God (Col 1:1) that caused Paul to become a minister. God is always the cause of true ministry. Although our fathers may be ministers, if we become true ministers of the gospel it is  not  because our fathers are ministers. True ministers of the gospel do not take that path because they seek honor for themselves, or b...

Daily Devotion: Exodus 7:6-10

Exodus 7:6-10    "And Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded them, so did they. And Moses was fourscore years old, and Aaron fourscore and three years old, when they spake unto Pharaoh. And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, When Pharaoh shall speak unto you, saying, Shew a miracle for you: then thou shalt say unto Aaron, Take thy rod, and cast it before Pharaoh, and it shall become a serpent. And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh, and they did so as the LORD had commanded: and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh, and before his servants, and it became a serpent." Moses and Aaron had begun to doubt whether they were right for the job the LORD had given them. Here, it is evident that God granted them a renewal of their faith. Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded them. In my opinion, all truly successful outcomes in our lives begin with this. Moses and Aaron were not young men. Moses was eighty years old, and Aaron was eighty-three years old. Still,...

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...
