Daily Devotion: Psalm 112:1-4

Psalm 112:1-4    "Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.  (2)  His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.  (3)  Wealth and riches shall be in his house: and his righteousness endureth for ever.  (4)  Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness: he is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous."

Back in Psalm 111:9, the Psalmist declares "...  holy and reverend is his name." Today, we read "Blessed is the man that feareth (holds in reverence) the LORD."  The first one speaks of a definite statement. The second one tells us that there is a blessing in holding the name of the Lord in reverence in our hearts and minds. The third commandment demands that we do not take the name of the Lord in vain. That is, we are not to speak it in such a manner that is less than the holiness that is declared in the very name of the Lord. This 112th Psalm speaks of some of the blessings that are experienced and enjoyed as we hold God's name in the utmost respect.

"His seed shall be mighty upon the earth." This speaks of several things in life such as children, crops, and general acts of kindness. To me, this is saying that if we hold the name of the Lord in its proper reverence, then our lives will ultimately show a positive effect upon the earth. "Wealth and riches shall be in his house: and his righteousness endureth for ever." We all have known, or do know, precious people of the Lord who do not have a wealth of money and possessions; yet, they are rich. Riches consist of much more than a bank account. Those who fear the Lord are rich in love whether they have finances or not. The Gaither Vocal Band sings a song that says, "I'm rich in faith and hope and love. I got more than my share. And I'll be movin' to a mansion just over in glory Where I'm a rightful heir."  This is the theme of this 112th Psalm.

One more thing about today's verses. Actually, for me, this is the most important. "Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness: he is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous." Even in our darkest hour, the name of Jesus is a Light to us. Paul writes to us about this light. "For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ." (2 Corinthians 4:6) Yes, even when we are in the dark valley, that Light still shines bright. Why would we not hold the name of Jesus in the absolute greatest reverence? "There is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." (Acts 4:12)

1. Take the name of Jesus with you,
Child of sorrow and of woe;
It will joy and comfort give you;
Take it then where'er you go.

2. Take the name of Jesus ever,
As a shield from ev'ry snare;
If temptations round you gather,
Breathe that holy name in prayer.

Refrain:
Precious name, oh how sweet!
Hope of Earth and joy of Heav'n.
Precious name, oh how sweet!
Hope of Earth and joy of Heav'n.

Daily Devotion: Colossians 1:25-26

Colossians 1:25-26    “Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;  Even   the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:” In verse twenty-four, Paul has expressed his joy in bearing hardship for the church. It is of this church, the body of Jesus Christ, that he is made a minister. Since Paul used the phrase “made a minister” in verse twenty-three of this same chapter, it seems there is something important that he wishes to convey. The Greek word translated as “made” means “to cause to be.” It was the will of God (Col 1:1) that caused Paul to become a minister. God is always the cause of true ministry. Although our fathers may be ministers, if we become true ministers of the gospel it is  not  because our fathers are ministers. True ministers of the gospel do not take that path because they seek honor for themselves, or b...

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...

Daily Devotion: Exodus 7:6-10

Exodus 7:6-10    "And Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded them, so did they. And Moses was fourscore years old, and Aaron fourscore and three years old, when they spake unto Pharaoh. And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, When Pharaoh shall speak unto you, saying, Shew a miracle for you: then thou shalt say unto Aaron, Take thy rod, and cast it before Pharaoh, and it shall become a serpent. And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh, and they did so as the LORD had commanded: and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh, and before his servants, and it became a serpent." Moses and Aaron had begun to doubt whether they were right for the job the LORD had given them. Here, it is evident that God granted them a renewal of their faith. Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded them. In my opinion, all truly successful outcomes in our lives begin with this. Moses and Aaron were not young men. Moses was eighty years old, and Aaron was eighty-three years old. Still,...
