Psalm 118:8-9 "It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man. (9) It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes."
The words, "It is better," are written twice in these verses. I'm of
the generation that looked forward each year to the Sears, Roebuck Catalog. I
especially looked forward to wearing out the Christmas Catalog by turning the
pages so many times. I bring that in because Sears had three levels of products
that were sold - "Good, Better, and Best". Each one was supposed to
be a little more reliable than the other. God's way of seeing things is quite
the opposite. Psalm 39:5 tells us that "... every man at his BEST state is
altogether vanity. Selah." The word, "better," as used in
today's verse is looking from man's viewpoint, meaning we are prone to
look for help in places that are not so good. But the word, "good,"
is used when we are told of God's goodness. One such instance is found in Psalm
100:5, "For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth
endureth to all generations." At best, man is vanity. Man's viewpoint of
facing situations is better when trusting God because God is GOOD! On the
Mountain of Transfiguration, Peter said, "Lord, it is GOOD for us to be
here." By that he was saying, "There is nowhere else I would rather
be than right here at this moment."
The Holy Spirit tells us in today's verses that it is better for us to flee for
protection in the Lord. It is better to confide in the Lord. It is better to
have hope and flee for refuge in the Lord than to feel secure in man. It is
better to seek the presence of the Lord than to think someone of the same low
degree as ourselves could help us. It is better to feel secure in God's
strength than to think men of authority would be able to help us. It is better
because God is GOOD! Where would it be best to look for help when I'm in
the middle of struggles and trials? Where could I go - but to the Lord?
Living below in this old sinful world
Hardly a comfort can afford
Striving alone to face temptation sore
Where could I go but to the Lord
Where could I go oh where could I go
Seeking the refuge for my soul
Needing a friend to save me in the end
Where could I go but to the Lord
