Daily Devotion: Psalm 122:1-4

Psalm 122:1-4    "I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.  (2)  Our feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem.  (3)  Jerusalem is builded as a city that is compact together:  (4)  Whither the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD, unto the testimony of Israel, to give thanks unto the name of the LORD."

There is a progression in these verses that bring about strength in our lives. As I read them, I see a personal relationship and devotion in the individual. "I was glad." Why? Because "we go into the house of the Lord." What is the result? Why is there gladness? "Our feet shall stand." Notice it goes from singular to plural. God pronounced every part of creation as being good except for one part. God said, "It is not good for man to be alone." He created a help meet for him and joined them as man and wife.It was never intended for us to go through life on our own. There is strength in numbers. There is strength in unity. That unity is to be found in the House of God where we join our hearts and minds in giving "thanks unto the name of the Lord."

We are to give unto the Lord the glory due unto His name, but the beautiful part of that is He gives us strength through our worship. He builds us up in our faith whereby "our feet shall stand" even in the hardest struggles of life. We can stand because we are not alone. The city of God is compact (joined) together. We have those who are of the same heart and mind of worship and praise. But most important, we have the presence of the Almighty God who has promised to walk with us each and every day.

Tomorrow, we will look at the "testimony of Israel" by which we are drawn to give thanks unto the name of the Lord.

1 I come to the garden alone,
While the dew is still on the roses;
And the voice I hear, falling on my ear,
The Son of God discloses.

Refrain:
And He walks with me, and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own,
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.

2 He speaks, and the sound of His voice
Is so sweet the birds hush their singing;
And the melody that He gave to me
Within my heart is ringing. [Refrain]

3 I'd stay in the garden with Him
Tho' the night around me be falling;
But He bids me go; thro' the voice of woe,
His voice to me is calling. [Refrain]

Daily Devotion: The Peace Of Christ - John 14:27

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. – John 14:27 As I sit and enjoy the Lord's creation and I feel the cool breeze blow across my skin, I am reminded of the peace that we find when we stop to appreciate the works of God. While we cannot necessarily count on another tomorrow in this world, all of God’s children have the assurance of something purer, something brighter, in the world to come. This brings peace when everything seems chaotic and difficult here and now. Jesus Christ was and remains a complex Person. Not only do we have to wrestle with His dual nature, we must face the depth of His teachings. Many of the Lord’s teachings are easy to grasp even if they are hard to apply. (Have you tried loving your enemies lately?) However, some of the Messiah’s sayings make us think very hard indeed. Isaiah 9:6 famously reveals that the virgin born Son of God would be the Prin...

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...
