Daily Devotion: Psalm 124:6-8

Psalm 124:6-8     "Blessed be the LORD, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth.  (7)  Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped.  (8)  Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth."

"Blessed be the LORD." That sentence stands on its own merit. No matter the situation in my life, the Lord is blessed and holy and righteous and pure. There is no spot or blemish in Him or any of His actions. If I can understand that great truth, then I am truly blessed to realize that out of that holiness, God chooses to deal mercifully with me. His mercy does not make Him more righteous. His blessings upon me does not make Him more holy. His goodness and gentleness toward me does not make Him more pure. He is all that and has chosen to reveal those qualities and blessings unto me; therefore, I am to be receptive and reflective of His holiness.

How many times have you heard this said, or have said it yourself, "I just got by, by the skin of my teeth." For anyone who may have never heard that saying, it means that I barely made it through a situation or circumstance. "I just barely made it." That sentence carries the thought that I was just strong enough, or my timing was just right, or I was "lucky" enough to survive. May I say that none of those statements reflect the glory and righteousness and purity and goodness of God? Notice how this 124th Psalm begins in verse one: "If it had not been the LORD who was on our side..." That verse continues on to remind the people that we should always be careful to give God the glory and honor for His actions toward us. The Lord reminds us by these words, "... now may Israel say..." Now may (I) say... Now may (you) say... Now may (we all) say.... "If it had not been the LORD who was on our side..."

Paul wrote it in this manner, "What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?" (Romans 8:31)  Thank you, Lord, for being "for us."

To God Be the Glory by Fanny Crosby

1 To God be the glory, great things He hath done,
so loved He the world that He gave us His Son,
who yielded His life an atonement for sin,
and opened the life-gate that all may go in.

Refrain:
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
let the earth hear His voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father through Jesus the Son,

and give Him the glory, great things He hath done.

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...

Daily Devotion: The Peace Of Christ - John 14:27

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. – John 14:27 As I sit and enjoy the Lord's creation and I feel the cool breeze blow across my skin, I am reminded of the peace that we find when we stop to appreciate the works of God. While we cannot necessarily count on another tomorrow in this world, all of God’s children have the assurance of something purer, something brighter, in the world to come. This brings peace when everything seems chaotic and difficult here and now. Jesus Christ was and remains a complex Person. Not only do we have to wrestle with His dual nature, we must face the depth of His teachings. Many of the Lord’s teachings are easy to grasp even if they are hard to apply. (Have you tried loving your enemies lately?) However, some of the Messiah’s sayings make us think very hard indeed. Isaiah 9:6 famously reveals that the virgin born Son of God would be the Prin...
