Daily Devotion: Psalm 125:1-2

Psalm 125:1-2    "They that trust in the LORD shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever.  (2)  As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from henceforth even for ever."

I urge each of us to read these verses and let the truth of them sink deep inside us. When you read the concluding verses of this Psalm, you can see that if we turn away from the Lord, we open ourselves to the wiles of Satan and the consequences of such actions. But in these verses, God is promising us security and safety. He is promising His holy and divine presence with us as we go through life. God is leading us to the place where our absolute confidence is in Him. We are to lean heavily upon Him in all our ways whether it be making decisions in life or whatever the situation. Our only stability is found in the Lord. Jesus Christ is the Rock of all ages. He is the only One who can satisfy the hunger inside us. We may go from place to place, seeking to find contentment and fulfillment, but only Jesus can give that. We look for things in which we can place our confidence to get us through the day, but only Jesus can do that. We look for a life of consistency, but only Jesus can give that. Can you see where I'm looking as I write these words? Only Jesus can give us that for which we long for in life. So when we place our trust in Him, we can know that every time we look up, Jesus is there. As I read these two verses where the writer uses the mountains to show us the stability of our Lord, I think of Psalm 46:2,1 (yes, I'm switching the order of them) ".... though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea, God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."  You see, even if there is change in those things we can see with our eyes, God is still our refuge and worthy of our trust. It's all about our relationship with Him. How is our walk with the Lord? Is there a need for us to take check of our closeness with Him?

1 Abide with me: fast falls the eventide;
the darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide.
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

2 Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day;
earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away.
Change and decay in all around I see.
O thou who changest not, abide with me.

3 I need thy presence every passing hour.
What but thy grace can foil the tempter's power?
Who like thyself my guide and strength can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, O abide with me.

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...

Daily Devotion: The Peace Of Christ - John 14:27

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. – John 14:27 As I sit and enjoy the Lord's creation and I feel the cool breeze blow across my skin, I am reminded of the peace that we find when we stop to appreciate the works of God. While we cannot necessarily count on another tomorrow in this world, all of God’s children have the assurance of something purer, something brighter, in the world to come. This brings peace when everything seems chaotic and difficult here and now. Jesus Christ was and remains a complex Person. Not only do we have to wrestle with His dual nature, we must face the depth of His teachings. Many of the Lord’s teachings are easy to grasp even if they are hard to apply. (Have you tried loving your enemies lately?) However, some of the Messiah’s sayings make us think very hard indeed. Isaiah 9:6 famously reveals that the virgin born Son of God would be the Prin...
