Daily Devotion: Psalm 126:5-6

Psalm 126:5-6    "They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.  (6)  He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him."

Have you ever felt like throwing up your hands and saying, "I quit!" Have you ever thought that your work was not doing any good at all? "What's the use in this? Nothing is going to happen! Why should I even continue?"  If you have ever felt like any of those things, then you know that it can be very detrimental to your emotions. But we have a promise from God in our verses today that if we are faithful in our work for Him, there are blessings to be experienced.

I'm not a farmer by any stretch of the imagination, but I remember times when I would sow grass seed on a barren part of the yard. I would water and watch! Water and watch! If it didn't come up when I thought it was supposed to germinate, then I would sow more seed and water and watch. Sometimes, I would think, "There will never be grass in this area." But then one morning, I would walk out and see green sprigs. Oh, it wasn't tall plush grass, but it was green! I could feel a sense of accomplishment when I would see those tiny sprigs of grass. It seems that work in God's kingdom is very similar to the sowing of grass and waiting for the seed to take hold and spring up the grass. We might get discouraged to think it is useless to continue, but the truth of the matter is that God is the One who gives the increase. We plant. We water. But God gives the final production of action that brings forth fruit to His glory.  Our verse tells us to go forth and that we will come again to the harvest, but in between those times, there is a period of waiting. Hmmm, That's called patience, isn't it? I'm still a work in progress. How about you?

1. I'm pressing on the upward way,
New heights I'm gaining every day;
Still praying as I onward bound,
Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.

Refrain:
Lord, lift me up and let me stand,
By faith, on Heaven's table land;
A higher plane than I have found;
Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.

2. My heart has no desire to stay
Where doubts arise and fears dismay;
Tho' some may dwell where these abound,
My pray'r, my aim is higher ground.

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...

Daily Devotion: The Peace Of Christ - John 14:27

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. – John 14:27 As I sit and enjoy the Lord's creation and I feel the cool breeze blow across my skin, I am reminded of the peace that we find when we stop to appreciate the works of God. While we cannot necessarily count on another tomorrow in this world, all of God’s children have the assurance of something purer, something brighter, in the world to come. This brings peace when everything seems chaotic and difficult here and now. Jesus Christ was and remains a complex Person. Not only do we have to wrestle with His dual nature, we must face the depth of His teachings. Many of the Lord’s teachings are easy to grasp even if they are hard to apply. (Have you tried loving your enemies lately?) However, some of the Messiah’s sayings make us think very hard indeed. Isaiah 9:6 famously reveals that the virgin born Son of God would be the Prin...
