Genesis 1:1-5 "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. (2) And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. (3) And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. (4) And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. (5) And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day."
"In the beginning God created..." Again as we begin our study of
people in the Bible, we must begin at the beginning. We are told that before
God began to move, there was nothing. "The earth was without form, and
void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep." But then, "... the
Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters." It was only after the
Spirit began to move that light was divided from the darkness. We can say
darkness is the absence of God. There was physical darkness until the Holy
Spirit began to move.
To a higher degree, we can say that in our own lives there was spiritual
darkness until the Holy Spirit began to move within us. We left off yesterday
with John chapter 1 speaking of the creation from the perspective of Jesus
Christ, the Living Word of God. "All things were made by him; and without
him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the
light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended
it not." (John 1:3-5) Paul wrote of that Spiritual light which gives us
enlightenment and understanding. "For God, who commanded the light to
shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the
knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ." (2 Corinthians
4:6) It is at this moment that I can identify with David when he said,
"Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto
it." (Psalm 139:6) But this I do know, anything good in me and any good
knowledge and understanding that I may have is all because of Jesus. He is my
righteousness and He is the Light that shines in my heart. I cannot understand
anything in the Word of God without His enlightenment.
"For thou art my lamp, O LORD: and the LORD will lighten my
darkness." (2 Samuel 22:29) Thank you Heavenly Father for shining the
Light into my heart in the face of Christ Jesus. What takes us from loving
darkness to loving light? What brings us to the place of enjoying a daily walk
in the light? I submit that it is the very same action as in the beginning.
"The Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters." It is
only after the Spirit of God begins to move in our lives that we can appreciate
and enjoy the light of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
1. The whole world was lost in the darkness of sin.
The light of the world is Jesus!
Like sunshine at noonday, his glory shone in.
The light of the world is Jesus!
Chorus:
Come to the light, ’tis shining for thee.
Sweetly the light has dawned upon me.
Once I was blind, but now I can see:
The light of the world is Jesus!
2. No darkness have we who in Jesus abide.
The light of the world is Jesus!
We walk in the light when we follow our guide.
The light of the world is Jesus! (chorus)
4. No need of the sunlight in Heaven we’re told;
The light of the world is Jesus!
The Lamb is the light in the city of gold.
The light of the world is Jesus! (chorus)
