Matthew 10:9-11 "Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses, Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat. And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, enquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence."
After having reminded His disciples that they had freely received the gifts of God and should impart them freely, Jesus continued that instruction. He had told them to go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. That was going to require them to travel through Jerusalem and the areas around it. Our first inclination would be to consider what we would need to make the trip.
This would seem to be a Biblical principal since we are taught in Luke 14:28 that a man who is going to build a tower (or undertake a journey) would be wise to first sit down and consider the cost. He would want to be sure he could finish what he started. Unfortunately, our nature is often such that if we want something bad enough, we can convince ourselves that we are more able than we really are to finish what we started. Thankfully, Jesus is not like us, and He always finishes what He starts.
The lesson to His disciples (and to us) is that Jesus is all we really need. If He has instructed us to do a thing (or make a journey), we need to put our trust fully in Him and His purpose. We cannot ever serve God by leaning on our own strength. He will always provide for our needs, often in ways we never anticipated.
We tend to confuse things that we need with things that we want to have. The Lord has never promised to give us things we want (although He often allows us some of those things). When David spoke of want in the twenty-third Psalm, he was speaking of the necessities of life. Our Shepherd will not allow us to be without the necessities, and we need to pray that He will show us what is truly necessary.
Dear ones, whatever your journey of service may look like, the Lord will provide for you. You will find those who are “worthy” (willing and generous) to help you on your way because the Lord will see to it. The road is not always easy. But the fellowship of God and His Son, Jesus Christ, makes the journey joyful despite the difficulties. Let us go, trusting in Him alone!
