Matthew 9:27-31 "And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou Son of David, have mercy on us. And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord. Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you. And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it. But they, when they were departed, spread abroad his fame in all that country."
Jesus had done so many wonderful and amazing things, and had taught with such authority, that crowds followed Him wherever He went. It was evident that not everyone followed Him out of love and devotion. After He fed the multitude with the loaves and fishes, He told them that they were not following Him because they saw the miracle (something that honored God – John 6:26) but because they had gotten their bellies full (satisfying a natural desire). The scribes and Pharisees followed Him to find reasons to criticize and mock.
At some point after He had healed the woman with the issue of blood and raised Jairus’s daughter back to life, there were two blind men in the crowd following behind Him. They were continually crying out to Him to have mercy on them. He could have simply stopped there in the street and healed them. Instead, He waited until He had come into the house and away from the prying eyes of those with their own agendas.
This became a very person thing between Jesus and the two blind men. Jesus encouraged them in the use of the faith God had given them. They confessed their belief that Jesus was able to do this thing they desired. Jesus then touched their eyes and healed them according to their faith. Let me say here that our faith is not required for Jesus to do His will. Rather, as stated concerning His rejection at Nazareth, His will is such that He does not do mighty works in the presence of unbelief.
I admit that I am often at a loss as to why Jesus told the people that He had helped to not tell anyone. Perhaps it was to try and slow the drawing of the curious and the unbelieving. One thing that scripture makes very clear is that the work of Jesus in the lives of His people will not be hidden. I know for myself that when He opened my (spiritually) blind eyes to who He is, I wanted to tell EVRYBODY!
Dear ones, do you find yourselves following after Jesus and crying to Him for mercy? How often have you found that mercy in a quiet place where no one but you and Jesus are? There is no other feeling in the world quite like the hand of Jesus reaching out and touching our lives with the blessed words in our heart “Be it according to your faith.” And yes, when He does that, we still want to tell EVERYBODY!
