Matthew 9:32-34 "As they went out, behold, they brought to him a dumb man possessed with a devil. And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake: and the multitudes marvelled, saying, It was never so seen in Israel. But the Pharisees said, He casteth out devils through the prince of the devils."
Jesus had taught the multitude with authority. He had performed healing miracle after healing miracle. He had calmed a raging storm. He had raised Jairus’s daughter from her deathbed. He had cast demons out of the two Gergesenes.
As Jesus and His disciples were walking publicly, they brought a man who was dumb (either unable to speak or both unable to speak and unable to hear). An evil spirit possessed the man and rendered him speechless. When Jesus healed him, the multitude was astonished and declared that this kind of power had never been seen in Israel before.
This was a people whose forefathers had walked through the Red Sea on dry ground as the waters stood up like a wall. They had seen water come from a rock and had eaten manna in the wilderness for forty years. They had seen the waters of the Jordan River held back so they could cross into the Promised Land, and they watched the walls of Jericho fall down flat. But they had never witnessed anyone going about day after day and performing miracles in their daily lives like Jesus did.
Of course, the Pharisees had to find some way to try and detract from the miracles that Jesus did and the power of His teaching. They accused Him of using the very power that He was casting out as the means to do so. This would mean that demons were being used to destroy demons. History is full of what happens when any group begins to destroy themselves from within. Whether we are talking about nations, or churches, or families, this kind of action leads to the utter demise of those involved.
Beloved of God, there was a time in our lives that we were much like the mute man with the evil spirit. Our carnal nature prevented us from saying anything that was honoring to our Heavenly Father, our Lord and Saviour, or the Holy Comforter that He has given us. However, when we come face to face with Jesus, our carnal nature is subdued, and we can worship and praise God in spirit and in truth. Jesus still works daily in the lives of His people, and it was never seen this way before His coming!
