Matthew 12:34-37 "O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned."
To keep this account in focus, let us remember that Jesus is addressing a crowd that included some self-righteous Pharisees. These men had tried to lessen the people’s esteem of Jesus by claiming that He had cast out a demon by the power of the prince of demons. Jesus then began to denounce their folly before the people while proving in both word and deed that He had come from God. Their long-awaited Messiah was here!
Jesus plainly told the Pharisees that they were not speaking “good things.” The reason was simple; they were evil. The word translated as evil in this instance meant “to have a hurtful influence.” It was not that they were engaged in some criminal enterprise in violation of the law. Their evil was in speaking against Jesus and the Holy Ghost. Listen to a man’s speech long enough, and you will learn where his heart is.
While it is easy to make that assumption, I would caution against reading this day of judgement as that one at the end of time that men often refer to. The justification and condemnation that Jesus spoke to these men about had nothing to do with His sacrifice for His children. In other words, their justification (or lack thereof) in this instance was about the words they spoke. There are no words in our vocabulary that can justify us eternally before the Living God. That justification lies only in Jesus Christ.
Dear ones, we need to remember that we stand before the judgement of Jesus every day. He judges our actions, our words, and our thoughts. This judgement affects our life in His kingdom here. His actions and words before the Father are the only things that secure our life in the hereafter. Let us be careful of the things we treasure in our hearts; these things will show up in our speech.
