Matthew 13:10-13 "And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand."
Matthew 13:16-17 "But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear. For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them."
We sometimes fail to realize what a blessing it is to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ with understanding. The word of God teaches us simple lessons and speaks of the simplicity that is in Jesus (2 Corinthians 11:3). Yet there are times that we read the word of God and do not understand what we have just read. We try to unravel the truth of God according to the understanding of mortal men, failing to recognize that God is not a man (Numbers 23:19).
If we know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, it is because that knowledge is given to us through the Holy Ghost. These mysteries include that God (and not happenstance) created the earth and its fullness. It is God that saw mankind’s need for a Savior and then filled that need Himself. Contrary to nature, God overshadowed Mary with the Holy Ghost, and a virgin gave birth to the only begotten Son of God. The only begotten Son of God became sin for us, died on the cross, and then conquered death and the grave on the third day.
Those to whom it is given to believe these “unbelievable” things go on to live a life of abundant righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17). Those to whom it is not given lose even the things they think they have. The scribes and Pharisees thought they were religious and looked down on other men even though they had been given the very law of God that taught otherwise. They had eyes but could not see beyond the failure of their own lives. Although they could hear the words that Jesus said, they could not hear the truth behind the words.
Dear ones, if you can hear with understanding the truth of your sinfulness and God’s righteousness then you are blessed. If you can see the righteousness that is in Christ alone then you are blessed. Over the generations, there have been many who would have loved to see and know what you see and know, but it was hidden from them. If you hear His voice and understand His words, give God the glory because men may be blessed to testify of these things, but only God can show you the truth.
