Isaiah 55:10-11 "For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: (11) So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it."
How many times have you sat down at the end of the day and thought,
"Today's been a good day. I accomplished everything I set out to do."
I suppose if our list is short, that we might be able to say that, but for me,
it doesn't happen very often. I get sidetracked, or I get lazy, or I just stop
short of getting everything done. Or there are times when I set out to do
something and then it fails to accomplish when I intended for it to do.
That is not true with God. May I say that God never "tries to do
something." God never gets to the end of the day and says, "Well,
I intended to do this or that, but I just couldn't get around to doing
it."
God sends the rain and it waters the earth. We have our rain guages and our
preconceived notions of how much rain we need or if there is too much rain. But
God knows exactly what we need and He sends the rain and the snow to water the
earth. Just now at this time of the year, we see the effects of the rain and
winter snows by the trees budding and flowers beginning to bloom. The grass is
turning green. The fields are getting ready to be tilled and sowed.
Paul used the natural example to show a great spiritual lesson. He said,
"I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase." (1
Corinthians 3:6) We attempt to do things, but God puts them into action.
Each time I attempt to preach, I pray that the words will have an effect on the
listeners. But the truth of the matter is that only God can give the increase
to those words. God tells us assuredly that His word "... shall
accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I
sent it." Again, the Apostle Paul wrote concerning the Word of God,
" For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye
received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word
of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also
in you that believe." (1 Thessalonians 2:13) It is important for us
to spend time in the Word of God for this simple reason, "It works!"
God works His Word in our lives as we apply it.
