Psalm 69:1-3 To the chief Musician upon Shoshannim, A Psalm of David. "Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul. (2) I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me. (3) I am weary of my crying: my throat is dried: mine eyes fail while I wait for my God."
Have you ever had a sinking feeling inside? Has it ever felt like the weight of
the world was on your shoulders and getting heavier as the moment goes by? Have
you ever felt like you were all alone in the conflict? Have you ever felt like
God was not answering your prayer? These questions are the very reason why I
love the Psalms. As you read through them, you know the writer was allowed by
the Holy Spirit to express his own questions and sometimes doubts and fears.
Today's Psalm is such a time as that. The writer is crying out, "Save me,
O God." He was talking about eternal salvation there; rather, he needed
saving (deliverance) from the calamity in which he found himself. It is the
same type of cry that Peter sent out when he was sinking beneath the waves,
"Save me!" In Peter's instance, the Lord immediately reached out his
hand and lifted Peter up. But there are times in our lives that it seems the
Lord is waiting to give us an answer.
"Mine eyes fail while I wait for my God." I'm so thankful that the
Psalmist reminds us that even while it seems God has not heard, or is not
immediately answering, that He is still "my God." In Jesus' darkest
hours, He asked the question "MY GOD, MY GOD, why hast thou forsaken
me?" Though it seems we are sinking... Though it seems we are crying out
over and over for the same thing... Though it seems we are not able to stand up
under the weight of the burden and are being overwhelmed by wave after wave of
struggles and conflicts... HE IS STILL "MY GOD." In the several
verses of this 69th Psalm, the writer makes many requests while waiting for
God's answer. But his absolute determination is this.... "But I am poor
and sorrowful: let thy salvation, O God, set me up on high. (30) I
will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with
thanksgiving." (Psalm 69:29-30) Today, may my determination be that
I will praise my God no matter the circumstance in my life. He is worthy!
1 Praise Him! Praise Him! Jesus, our blessed Redeemer! Sing, O earth– His
wonderful love proclaim! Hail Him! Hail Him! highest archangels in glory;
strength and honor give to His holy name! Like a shepherd, Jesus will guard His
