Daily Devotion: Psalm 119:11

Psalm 119:11    "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee."

Throughout the Word of God, we can see the Lord placing Himself in a position of support, encouragement, and protection for us. We read in Deuteronomy 33:27 these words of Moses, "The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them."  I'm so thankful that He has revealed Himself to us in this manner. Although I have to admit that I have tried my own way too many times, I understand that I need the Lord. I believe Jesus with all my heart when He said, "Without me, you can do nothing." I believe God has given to us His armour in which we are shielded from the fiery darts of Satan which are constantly being hurled at us. I trust the shield of faith which has been given to us and I believe that "faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." (Romans 10:17) Therefore I believe it is important to observe today's passage of Scripture. We are to hide the Word of God in our hearts as the source of direction for our lives.

I confess that I have not been as diligent as I should in memorizing the Word of God; but I believe we do ourselves damage if we do not spend time in the Word each day. The writer of this 119th Psalm began this section by saying, "Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word." (Psalm 119:9)  You see, it isn't just enough to memorize Scripture. Satan can quote Scripture. He even tried that with Jesus. But  we are to "take heed thereto." That is, we are to guard ourselves by seeking to understand and apply the Word to our lives. We cannot do that of our own ability; rather, we need the Holy Spirit to guide us into and through the Word of God. God will reveal "... them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God." (1 Corinthians 2:10) I will close with this thought: We cannot hide it in our hearts if we do not read the Bible. We cannot take heed to the Word of God if we don't read it. God will provide the understanding when we apply ourselves to the learning.

1 Break now the bread of life, dear Lord, to me,
as once you broke the loaves beside the sea.
Beyond the sacred page I seek you, Lord;
my spirit waits for you, O living Word.

4 O send your Spirit now, dear Lord, to me,
that he may touch my eyes and make me see.
Show me the truth concealed within your Word,
for in your book revealed I see you, Lord.

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...

Daily Devotion: The Peace Of Christ - John 14:27

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. – John 14:27 As I sit and enjoy the Lord's creation and I feel the cool breeze blow across my skin, I am reminded of the peace that we find when we stop to appreciate the works of God. While we cannot necessarily count on another tomorrow in this world, all of God’s children have the assurance of something purer, something brighter, in the world to come. This brings peace when everything seems chaotic and difficult here and now. Jesus Christ was and remains a complex Person. Not only do we have to wrestle with His dual nature, we must face the depth of His teachings. Many of the Lord’s teachings are easy to grasp even if they are hard to apply. (Have you tried loving your enemies lately?) However, some of the Messiah’s sayings make us think very hard indeed. Isaiah 9:6 famously reveals that the virgin born Son of God would be the Prin...

Daily Devotion: Exodus 7:6-10

Exodus 7:6-10    "And Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded them, so did they. And Moses was fourscore years old, and Aaron fourscore and three years old, when they spake unto Pharaoh. And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, When Pharaoh shall speak unto you, saying, Shew a miracle for you: then thou shalt say unto Aaron, Take thy rod, and cast it before Pharaoh, and it shall become a serpent. And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh, and they did so as the LORD had commanded: and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh, and before his servants, and it became a serpent." Moses and Aaron had begun to doubt whether they were right for the job the LORD had given them. Here, it is evident that God granted them a renewal of their faith. Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded them. In my opinion, all truly successful outcomes in our lives begin with this. Moses and Aaron were not young men. Moses was eighty years old, and Aaron was eighty-three years old. Still,...
