Psalm 119:25-26 "My soul cleaveth unto the dust: quicken thou me according to thy word. (26) I have declared my ways, and thou heardest me: teach me thy statutes."
"I can do it myself." How many times have you heard that? How many
times have you said that? Those words are spoken from a very early age.
Toddlers want to do things themselves and quite honestly that is part of the
learning process. I'm not sure that I have graduated from that school of
learning yet.
The Psalmist was in the process of graduating when he discovered just how dry a
soul can get by trying to do everything on our own. "My soul cleaves to
the dust." I'm as dry as dry can be. A puff of wind will scatter what is
left inside me if I do not get help. "I have declared my ways." The
part that is left unsaid in that statement would be something like this:
"I have declared my ways..... and they just didn't work." Can any of
us identify with that? I know I sure can. It's experience that is writing these
words just now. I thought I could do it on my own. I declared how I was going
to do it. It didn't work.
You see, when we arrive at that point, then we are teachable. I'm so dry
because of my failure to accomplish what I set out to do. "Lord, speak to
me. Give me instructions and assurance by the Word of your mouth (the Bible).
It just didn't work, but thank you Lord that you heard me. I'm so ready to
listen and follow your direction for my life. There is something wonderful
about reading God's Word and knowing that He had you in mind when those words
were inspired. But Lord, now I know... I cannot do it myself even when I think
I have it all figured out. I need you, Lord.
1 What a fellowship, what a joy divine,
leaning on the everlasting arms;
what a blessedness, what a peace is mine,
leaning on the everlasting arms.
2 O how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way,
leaning on the everlasting arms;
O how bright the path grows from day to day,
leaning on the everlasting arms. [Refrain]
3 What have I to dread, what have I to fear,
leaning on the everlasting arms?
I have blessed peace with my Lord so near,
leaning on the everlasting arms.
Refrain:
Leaning, leaning,
safe and secure from all alarms;
leaning, leaning,
leaning on the everlasting arms.
